Lavender has been used for centuries in laundry.
She’d spent the night, curled up with a novel.
Some story about a woman being saved from certain death, and if not for the intervention of foreigners, would have been yet another statistic.
Reading tonight had given her a measure of peace, allowing her to rest her sore feet.
She massaged her legs aching soles.
Most of the day had been spent in the kitchen, and while her job as a trainee had its perks (like the lovely croissant’s she’d learned to make last week) it sometimes felt she brought work home, when her roommates expected her to “cook something nice tonight.”
She sighed. About the only good thing that happened to me tonight was removing my bra”
The said article of clothing lay in a small pile in the corner.
Most of her laundry had been done. And while her friends did offer time to time to do her laundry, she preferred her closet intact.
She checked her phone.
Thankfully there were no messages.
Sometimes she hated the additional responsibility.
A slight pang of guilt rose. “I should count myself lucky” she thought. Just today roughly the majority of staff had been let go.
Hers had been one of the few names worth keeping.
The small voice in her head said “Its because you’re good…REMEMBER THAT”
I am good. And she was.
It had been hard initially. Learning this. Weighing that. Getting the balances right.
Worth it though.
For once she knew she was on the right track in life.
She tilted her head. Felt a slight crack. It eased the tension in her neck.
Standing, she heard the beep of the washing machine. And frowned.
“my roommate’s have left it on again” she muttered.
Walking down the short flight of steps, she turned the lights on, and as her eyes adjusted, she reminded herself that she needed to buy pegs.
Today had been a flurry. A blur.
Aside from that stupid group of sullen youth, who’d demanded payment for patching the road, nothing else was really a highlight of her day.
Stupid kids.
Asking for payment when they used our things.
Anyway.
Pegs. For the clothes.
“I need to add that to my ever growing list of things to do.”
Sighing ahe turned the lights off, and walked back up to her room.
The washing machine…. Still beeping.
